Rats and mice move indoors for fall and winter: See most infested cities - Fox Weather

Image
File from winter 2022/23: San Francisco Bay Area rats and mice took shelter in homes to get away from winter storms. Temperatures are getting cooler as we head through October, and furry not-so-friends start heading into your home for heat and food. "Each fall, mice and other rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes in the United States," stated Orkin, a pest control company, in a statement. "They typically enter homes between October and February looking for food, water and shelter from the cold." Orkin crunched numbers and ranked the top 50 most rodent-infested cities. They used the number of new rodent treatments, both commercial and residential, from fall 2022 through summer 2023. They call it their "rattiest cities" list. For the ninth time in a row, Chicago "wins" the rat race. STORMS ARE DRIVING RODENTS INTO CALIFORNIA HOMES Most of the top 50 hit freezing routinely each winter. Although Los Angeles, San Diego, Tampa and Miami made t

The Best Time Of Year To Get Rid Of Your Lawn's Weeds And Why - House Digest

Image
Because different types of weeds will emerge in late spring and early summer, applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the early spring helps to control these unwanted plants before they start to appear. If you wait to treat them until the autumn, these weeds will have the chance to become stronger and affect the ability of the grass to gain strength during the summer. The pre-emergent herbicide takes care of common broadleaf weeds that often plague your yard, such as dandelions and plantain. The herbicide prevents the seeds from germinating, ensuring they never have a chance to start growing. It's also especially helpful to treat weeds during the spring when you have cool-season grasses in your lawn, including common strains like Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue. These options are highly popular for lawns in certain areas of the United States, but they typically begin to go into a dormancy phase in the summer when they become stressed from drough

An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure with summer weeds - Landscape Management magazine

Fall is a good time to start thinking about summer weed prevention when temperatures warm up next spring. (Photo: PBI-Gordon) As summer transitions into fall, lawn care operators (LCOs) must turn their attention to the spring season and make careful decisions regarding weed control products and their application timing. This strategic planning is crucial for effectively managing knotweed, purslane, spurge and foxtail. First line of defense Gil Del Rosario Maintaining healthy turfgrass is the first line of defense against knotweed, purslane, spurge and foxtail, says Gil Del Rosario, Western district leader and market development specialist with Corteva Agriscience . Preemergent herbicide treatments provide preventive control, while postemergent treatments are curative measures that can help improve the spectrum of weed control. Using cultural practices that help maintain healthy turfgrass can minimize weed occurrence and improve overall weed control. For example, adequate fert

Photos reveal unbelievable transformation of tiny Chicago park: ‘It was pretty much just turf grass and dandelions’ - Yahoo Life

One excited Redditor just showed the internet what an incredible transformation Chicago has made in only three years by rewilding one of its city parks. "Rewilding" land is a new trend that replaces water-guzzling, non-native grass lawns and invasive plants with native species, essentially turning the land back to its natural state. According to this Redditor, the city of Chicago decided to rewild one of its parks. "Just about three years ago, this park was a giant lawn," they said in the caption. "The city chose to turn it into this thing of beauty!" Photo Credit: u/sonicenvy / Reddit The photos in the post show a winding gravel path through a flowering meadow. The lush plants grow waist-high under a dazzlingly blue sky. With the border of trees around the park blocking out the view of any buildings, the acre of meadow could have been deep in the wilderness, instead of in the middle of a major city. In Defense of the Rat - Sierra Club

This article was originally published in Hakai Magazine . There was a time when we human beings used to put animals on trial for their alleged crimes against us. The earliest of these prosecutions in the Western tradition of law appears to be a case against moles in the Valle d'Aosta, Italy, in 824 AD, and legal actions continued into the 1900s. In the centuries between, a killer pig was dressed in human clothing and hanged in Falaise, France; Marseille put dolphins on trial for crimes unknown; and a rooster—in what must have been a case of mistaken identity—was burned at the stake in Basel, Switzerland, for the witchery of laying an egg while male. The classic investigation of this subject, E. P. Evans's 1906 book The Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals , finds no evidence that these trials were carried out for comedic effect, or in fact that the litigation was anything but gravely serious. That said, things obviously did get weird. In 1522, "some rats

CERTIFIED TEXAS EXPERT GARDENER — Herbicides needed for weed control in SETX Published 12:04 am Wednesday, October 25, 2023 Weed control is sometimes complicated but can be achieved utilizing multiple methods. Once again, our local weather has been amazing! In my opinion, this is the perfect time to be outdoors performing all gardening tasks: planting vegetable gardens, tidying up landscapes or sprucing up flower beds. The only thing missing from our amazing weather pattern: rainfall. Eventually, rain events will return but as we wait, don't forget to mulch, mulch, mulch-every gardener's best friend. Remember seeds need light to germinate, adding 3 to 4 inches of mulch in garden beds will deter weed seed germination and minimi

How Much Does a Rat Exterminator Cost? - Bob Vila

Image
Photo: depositphotos.com Highlights The average rat exterminator cost is $377, with a range of $176 to $580 possible for some infestations. Rat exterminator costs can vary based on several factors, such as home size, infestation location and severity, removal method, extra fees, and follow-up visits. Signs of a rat infestation that need to be addressed include rat droppings, scurrying sounds, smudges along baseboards, teeth marks on holes, and an unidentified musty odor. Rats carry diseases and tend to die in inconvenient locations, which makes hiring a pest control company the safest option. Professionals are also the most experienced at locating nests and sealing holes to prevent future infestations. Finding signs of rats in a home can bring dread to any homeowner. If homeowners suspect there's a potential sharp-toothed rodent exploring the house, it's time to call a rat exterminator. Rats can bring with them destruction and disease, making it important to get rid of rats in
