Fall integrated pest management seminar set for Nov. 15 in Dallas ... - AgriLife Today

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be presenting the Fall 2023 Integrated Pest Management, IPM, Seminar from 8 a.m.-5p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Dallas.

The event will be held in the Water Education Building, located at 17360 Coit Road. The cost to register is $100 before Nov. 10. After Nov. 10, registration is $125. To register, visit https://tx.ag/2023FallIPMSeminar.

A lunch will be provided, and a total of 10 Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for those attending, including five agricultural and five structural pest units.

Participants will receive the latest updates on pesticide laws, pest biology and identification, and pest management strategies. The courses will be taught by experts from AgriLife Extension and the local community.

Seminar speakers and topics

The topics and speakers will be:

  • Program approach to weed control – Manuel Chavarria, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension turfgrass specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
  • Improving plant health in North Texas landscapes – Greg Church, Ph.D., plant pathologist and arborist, owner of Synergistic Plant Health, Allen.
  • How to develop a successful IPM program – Katerina Graham, AgriLife Extension horticulture agent in Dallas County, and Brad Voss, AgriLife Extension horticulture agent in Collin County.
  • Updates on Texas Department of Agriculture and Structural Pest Control Services regulations – Janet Hurley, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management program specialist, Dallas.
  • Public pests of concern – Sonja Swiger, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension entomologist and professor in the Department of Entomology, Stephenville.
  • IPM of wood-destroying insects in Texas – Bryant McDowell, AgriLife Extension urban IPM program specialist, Dallas.

British Columbia's new restrictions on the use of certain rodent poisons may be having an unintended side effect, amid reports of growing rat and mouse populations. As of Jan. 31, B.C. permanently banned the sale and use of a class of poisons known as second-generation anti-coagulants, with an exception for certain sectors deemed "essential services," like food production or health-care facilities.
