Training sessions for termite and household pest control set in March in Dallas - AgriLife Today - AgriLife Today

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a training session for termite control on March 14 and for household pests on March 21 in Dallas.

The trainings will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Integrated Pest Management Experience House located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Dallas, 17630 Coit Road.

Registration for each course is $100 a person in advance or $125 at the door. To register for the termite biology and control course, visit https://tx.ag/TermiteBiologyControl and https://tx.ag/GenHouseholdPests for the general household pests course. Space is limited to 20 participants at each meeting.

There will be several Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units available for both courses, including one wood-destroying insect structural pest control service unit for the termite biology and control course and two general and one laws and regulations for the general household pests course.

Both courses are tailored for pest management professionals, apprentices, technicians and applicators.

March 14 termite biology and control course

The March 14 termite biology and control course is designed to give participants a better understanding of termite control methods, and consists of both classroom sessions and interactive demonstrations.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Termite biology, behavior and life cycles.
  • Common wood destroying insects and their impact on structures.
  • Effective control strategies.
  • Hands-on demonstrations in termite prevention and control methods.

March 21 general household pests course

The general household pests course will be an introduction to entomology, integrated pest management and the safe use of pesticides. Participants will learn how to identify some of the most common pests and how to safely control them in their own homes.

There will also be hands-on demonstrations on the safe use of sprayers, dusters and bait applications for pest control and a session on different insect life stages.

Topics include the following:

  • Insect identification of household pests.
  • Integrated pest management principles.
  • Pesticides and application methods.
  • Classes of insecticides.
  • How to read and decode material safety data sheets.

British Columbia's new restrictions on the use of certain rodent poisons may be having an unintended side effect, amid reports of growing rat and mouse populations. As of Jan. 31, B.C. permanently banned the sale and use of a class of poisons known as second-generation anti-coagulants, with an exception for certain sectors deemed "essential services," like food production or health-care facilities.
