The Internet Has a Rat Poison Problem - National Audubon Society

Image
My shopping spree was born out of boredom. On a lazy July morning I was in bed browsing Amazon when I decided to follow up on a tip I had received. I plugged the word "brodifacoum" into Amazon's search bar, and a second later my screen filled with what are known as second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, a class of rat poison so dangerous to humans and wildlife that the Environmental Protection Agency strove to keep them from being sold in consumer stores. After clicking around for a few bewildered minutes, I ordered something called Motomco D 31402 Jaguar Rodenticide Pail Pest Control. It cost $69.99, its delivery was free, and it had a 4.8-star rating. The top customer review said, "Kills them all, but the dead mice smells is not what I need," which sounded like a solid testimonial.  To be clear, I never intended to use this product. In fact, I had doubts as to whether the package would actually arrive. But a few days later, a big plasti

The number one job of Animal Control is to control the spread of rabies. The number one job of pet owners is to keep pets current on immunizations. Important history and information on rabies can be found here. ACOs have a busy schedule — capturing injured/sick animals, investigating dog bite incidents, helping shelter animals get adopted, enforcing state and local dog and cat licensing laws, providing surrender-prevention services, dealing with dog barking co

Mayor - News - April 2022 - New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board Begins Larval Mosquito Abatement Across Orlea - City of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS— The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) begins conducting pre-season larval mosquito abatement across Orleans Parish today. Over the next two weeks, they will be applying larvicide treatments by truck to the Lower 9th Ward as well as areas above I-610, including Lakeview, Gentilly, and Desire.   Larvicide treatments target the immature stages of mosquitoes that breed in natural water bodies such as roadside ditches and swales, or in man-made containers such as tires, buckets, cemetery vases, kiddie pools, or other trash and debris.   NOMTRCB uses biological larvicides that are derived from naturally occurring soil bacteria. These products are highly effective and have been used in mosquito control for over 30 years. They work by killing mosquito larvae before they complete their life cycle and become flying, biting adults. These larvicides are non-toxic and only affect mosquitoes and flies. They will n

It's such a joy to see your houseplants, vegetable garden, flowers—or whatever greenery you have, no matter how small—thrive and bloom. But occasionally, you discover a nasty little surprise: What the heck is that weird bug? And what is it doing to my plant? Before you panic, take stock of what's going on. Sometimes you see the damage first, sometimes the bug. To accurately ID the problem, look for other clues such as webs, sticky sap-like substances and holes in the leaves. For houseplants, it's also smart to isolate the affected plant from others before they all get infected. Of course, outdoors, you'll encounter bugs on your plants regularly. But the most common way a houseplant gets infected is when you bring a new plant home from the nursery, or if you let them spend the summer outdoors. Either way, inspect the plant before bringing it into your home, give it a once-over with an insecticidal soap before taking it indoors for the winter, and keep it away

The 'Miske Enterprise': Trial For The Accused Crime Boss Is Being Postponed Again - Honolulu Civil Beat

Image
It will be at least another year before Michael J. Miske Jr., the former Honolulu businessman accused of racketeering, drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder-for-hire, along with seven co-defendants, will face a trial by jury in federal court. Miske is the former owner of Kamaaina Termite and Pest Control, Oahu Termite and Pest Control, M Nightclub and its successor, Encore, and several other local businesses, which federal prosecutors allege were used to conceal the activities of a broad criminal conspiracy he controlled and directed. Last month, Miske co-defendant Delia-Anne Fabro-Miske, through her attorney, John Schum, asked for the trial to be delayed in order to provide sufficient time to assess and evaluate the massive amount of evidence that has been turned over to the defendants and their attorneys in the process of discovery.   The trial, which had been set to begin in September, was originally scheduled to be held in September 2020, and had already been delay

Why many gardeners welcome dandelions, or at least learn to live with them - OregonLive

Image
Dandelions are so colorful, so cheerful — even delicious and nutritious. Why, then, does our culture label them landscaping enemy No. 1? Not everyone loathes dandelions. Youngsters love their simple gladness and puffballs of soft seeds. The rare adult never unlearns that feeling. At least one grown-up gardening guru still loves the pretty golden invaders, and is gently spreading the word about their joy and benefits, as well as how easy it is to manage them without chemicals. "Dandelions can be found in my backyard," said Erika Johnson, coordinator of Washington State University Clark County Extension's Master Gardener program. "They are most welcome! They are one the of the earliest seasonal sources of nectar for pollinators." In recent years, as we all try to lean greener, our status update regarding our relationship with dandelions seems to be morphing from "Divorced" to "It's complicated." We're all trained to admire — or even wor

Not all hunters are after trophies, many appreciate their conservation role too - Lansing State Journal

Image
Amy Trotter, guest writer  |  Lansing State Journal Anti-conservationists have been parading the term "trophy hunting" around at legislative and Natural Resources Commission meetings to conjure up images of leather-clad barbarians slaughtering animals indiscriminately. The term is fabricated by animal rights activists, and purposely intended to paint legal and ethical conservationists in a negative light — and pad their bottom line. For too long, these activists have gotten away with using, at best, willful ignorance and, at worst, outright lies to spread misinformation about hunters, trappers and anglers. Multitudes of recovered species in the United States, both hunted and not hunted, owe their recovery to hunters and the North American model of wildlife conservation. Michigander's trapping, hunting and angling roots run hundreds of years deep. Yet, back then, there were no regulations or restrictions on hunting and trapping and the commerci
