Many factors can be weighed in deciding which pest control company is right for you. Our list of the best pest control companies provides a great starting point, but be sure to consider the following as you do your own research: Availability In Your Area Make sure the company you choose can accommodate services in your location. If you live in a remote area or a city where the company of your choice does not operate, it may not be able to provide service to your home. Double-check to make sure you are within range of a company's service area before moving forward. Cost Most pest control companies can provide a ballpark estimate of cost over the phone, but many will need to perform a home inspection before providing you with a more accurate quote. Some companies offer free inspections and quotes while others do not. Additionally, some companies offer payment plans whereas others only accept payment up-front. Ultimately, the cost of service will vary based on the type of pe

When To Apply Preemergent Herbicide for the Best Results - USA TODAY

Keeping your lawn's grass green and healthy doesn't come easy, but preemergent herbicides can help. A preemergent herbicide is a weed killer applied to soil before weed seeds germinate, preventing them from sprouting and establishing roots. Knowing when to apply preemergent is crucial for success. Spraying too early or late in the growing season can result in wasted resources and triumphant weeds. The best time to apply preemergent herbicide is typically in early spring before soil temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit. But with so many types of weeds and climate variations, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to applying preemergent. We reached out to Craig Elworthy, founder of DIY natural lawn care company Lawnbright, to learn about all things preemergent. Below, we explain the several types of preemergent and how to apply them for a greener lawn this year. In what month should you apply preemerge

Keep This Warm Season Invasive Weed Under Control With These Tips - House Digest

Image
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and controlling the notoriously persistent chamberbitter weed is no exception. Enter the world of pre-emergent weed killers, steadfast guardians against the stealthy invasion of weed seeds. For chamberbitter gripe weed, seek a product boasting isoxaben, oxyfluorfen, or flumioxazin. An example of a flumioxazin-infused herbicide is SureGuard SC Pint, readily available at Walmart. If nurturing a warm-season grass variety like Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, or centipede, isoxaben is your best bet. Dimethemid-laden herbicides, while not as potent, do hold their own in this combat. Timing is essential, though. As the veil of spring lifts and the heat of summer touches the earth, the chamberbitter weed triggers its annual invasion. Before seed germination is your golden hour to spray a pre-emergent herbicide. Now, onto the actual battleground. Don a mask, goggles, and gloves, concoct a perfect b

Stefanie Geckler was raised in Nevada County and is the current Supervising Animal Control Officer of the Nevada County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) and founder of nonprofit, Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team (HEART), but if you asked a youthful Geckler if her dreams involved law enforcement and animals, you'd be barking up the wrong tree. Stephanie and Chippy Geckler never envisioned one day she'd be helping animals, nor working in law enforcement. As a teenager, she had her eyes set on Hollywood—the stars—the glam—the fame—and she did it. After attending college at San Francisco State University and film school in Los Angeles, Geckler landed a few lucky commercial breaks,

A Homeowner's Guide to Ghost Ants - Family Handyman

Image
You might expect the ghost ant to be scarier than it is. The creepy name actually derives from its light color, which makes it difficult to see. These ants like it warm. They favor Southerly climates, although they manage to find their way into warm indoor environments in colder places. Colonies have been discovered in apartment buildings and greenhouses as far north as Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you live in a climate where ghost ants can survive outdoors, you're likely to find them swarming around the undersides of leaves. That's where aphids and other insects leave deposits of honeydew, which ghost ants love. Like other ant species that relish the sweet, sticky stuff, ghost ants protect the producers from other predators, a symbiotic relationship that ensures a steady food source. What Are Ghost Ants? Ghost ants, also known as black-headed ants, are tiny, less than one-sixteenth of an inch. The head and thorax are dark brown, while the gaster (the bulbous hind part of t

How to Plant and Grow Lemon Cucumbers - Better Homes & Gardens

Image
Usually, when planting an edible garden, whether you're a seasoned pro with a list of favorites or just starting with your first vegetable garden, you'll stick to foods you're familiar with, such as popular tomato varieties or easy-to-grow potatoes. However, it's also fun to experiment with less-common fruits and veggies that you might not usually see at the grocery store. You don't have to plant a whole row of them, but trying just one or two new plants each year could lead to finding an all-time favorite. Lemon cucumbers ( Cucumis sativus 'Lemon') aren't exactly a supermarket staple, but these unusual veggies have many traits that make them a must in your garden. Despite their name, lemon cucumbers don't have any citrus-like flavor; they taste just like the traditional green, oblong cucumbers you're used to seeing and eating (they're often considered a little less bitter, though). Instead, the "lemon" part of their name

Near-chromosomal-level genome of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a potential resource for ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract The red palm weevil (RPW) is a highly destructive pest that mainly affects palms, particularly date palms ( Phoenix dactylifera ), in the Arabian Gulf region. In this study, we present a near-chromosomal-level genome assembly of the RPW using a combination of PacBio HiFi and Dovetail Omini-C reads. The final genome assembly is around 779 Mb in size, with an N50 of ~43 Mb, consistent with our previous flow cytometry estimates. The completeness of the genome was confirmed through BUSCO analysis, which indicates the presence of 99.5% of BUSCO single copy orthologous genes. The genome annotation identified a total of 29,666 protein-coding, 1,091 tRNA and 543 rRNA genes. Overall, the proposed genome assembly is significantly superior to existing assemblies in terms of contiguity, integrity, and genome completeness. Similar conte
